BJP concedes defeat in Telangana MLC elections

Hyderabad: The BJP on 20 March issued a statement accepting the results of the Hyderabad-Ranga Reddy-Mahbub Nagar MLC elections. It further said that Telangana Chief Minister KCR's plan to crowd the election contest by ensuring multiple social influencers were in the fray worked in his favour. However, the BJP said it was an unethical attempt to confuse the electorate and split the BJP vote.

The counting of votes to the elections of Hyderabad- Ranga Reddy-Mahbub Nagar graduate constituency ended on 20th March evening. TRS candidates S Vani Devi, first timer and daughter of former late Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, registered a win with 1.89 lakh votes and defeated sitting BJP MLC Ramachander Rao.

Responding to the defeat, BJP Telangana chief spokesperson K. Krishna Saagar Rao said since this was a limited electorate election, the TRS could have its way but the BJP strongly believes this will not work in corporations and Assembly elections.

"Both our candidates Ramchander Rao and Premender Reddy gave their best campaigning for their candidatures. Especially, Ram Chander Rao has given a very tough fight to the TRS candidate in all rounds and has lost this election squarely with a small margin," he added.

Mr. Rao said the voting pattern revealed voters' opposition to the TRS. The TRS couldn't win both seats in the first preference vote and had to fight till the last round even for the second preference vote, he said.

"BJP believes the TRS barely scraped through in both MLC seats. This despite the deployment of massive resources and engaging their entire party and government machinery for the last two months," the BJP leader said.

Another remarkable outcome of this election, according to Mr. Rao, was that the Congress party was wiped out of the electoral ecosystem of Telangana. "It's evident that the future electoral battles in Telangana will be only between BJP and TRS and we are certain that the people of Telangana will vote for change in the next elections," he said.
