Srikakulam: Hours after it was tranquilized, the female sloth bear that killed a farmer and injured six others, died on its way to Indira Gandhi Zoological Park on Tuesday. Chief Conservator of Forests P Rama Mohan Rao said the bear attacked a bull on Monday night but suffered injuries in the retaliatory action.
Later, it moved to a shed and stayed calm. On information from the farmers, a team of forest officials administered tranquilizer shots to bring the animal under control. When they were shifting the animal to the zoo, they injected an antidote dose. However, the bear died a few minutes later. ``The animal was very active. It became calm after a fight with the bull. It might have suffered serious injuries though we did not find any blood stains due to thick fur,'' the CFO said.
The locals said that the bear was the mother of two cubs and had turned ferocious after the cubs were separated. Superintendent of Police, Srikakulam GR Radhika said that among the six injured persons in the bear attack, four have been shifted to a private hospital in Vizag. Their condition is stated to be serious.
