Cash-for-baby scam: How Srushti used specially developed mobile app to manage illegal funding

Hyderabad: Police investigations into the Universal Srushti Fertility Centre scam revealed that staff members’ bank accounts were misused to channel huge cash transactions.

A specially developed mobile application was also used to manage these illegal dealings, helping the accused conceal money flow from regulatory authorities, the police said.

Key accused in custody

Dr. Namrata, the chief of the fertility centre, has emerged as the prime accused. She was recently taken into one-day police custody for interrogation.

Officials say she admitted to appointing agents, facilitating illegal adoption deals, and enlisting other medical professionals in the operation. Her son, Jayant Krishna, also played a crucial role, according to investigators.

Scale of illegal operations

The racket is believed to have been active for over ten years, generating crores of rupees under the guise of surrogacy and fertility treatments. Couples seeking treatment in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Vijayawada were registered under separate records to hide irregularities.

27 arrests so far

So far, 27 people have been arrested in connection with the case, including agents and collaborators. Due to the gravity of the offences, the case was transferred to the Hyderabad CCS for deeper investigation.

Next steps in probe

Police are preparing to seek extended custody of Dr. Namrata to gather further details on the money trail and the network of accomplices.

Case background

The scam came to light after complaints surfaced about illegal surrogacy and the sale of infants in the city. What began as a fertility service inquiry has now blown up into one of the biggest surrogacy scams uncovered in Telangana, exposing glaring loopholes in monitoring private fertility clinics.

Andhra Govt. Action

As the investigation widened, the Andhra Pradesh government also suspended three doctors for their alleged involvement in irregular fertility practices linked to Universal Srushti Fertility Centre.

Those suspended include: Dr. Vasupalli Ravi, Head of Anaesthesia, Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam; Dr. P Ushadevi, Associate Professor of Gynaecology; and Dr. A Vidyullatha, Assistant Professor of Paediatrics, Government Medical College, Srikakulam.
