CEIR portal: Telangana cops recover 30,049 stolen mobiles in 13 months; 2nd highest in India

Hyderabad: Telangana State Police has successfully recovered 30,049 stolen mobile phones ā€“ the second-largest haul in the country. The officials have attributed the size of the recovery to the CEIR portal launched on April 19, 2023.

What is the CEIR portal?

The CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) portal was developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) to curb the menace of mobile theft and the spread of counterfeit mobile devices.

The CEIR portal was officially launched nationwide on May 17, 2023, and was started on a pilot basis in Telangana State on April 19.

76 mobiles recovered per day in Telangana

In Telangana, an addl. DGP of CID (Criminal Investigation Department) is the designated nodal officer for the CEIR portal and is also the ā€˜Super Userā€™. CEIR portal is operational in all 780 police stations of Telangana State.

The then ADG CID Mahesh Bhagwat was the first state-level nodal officer who streamlined the process of mobile recovery within the state and outside. Currently, ADGP, CID Shikha Goel, IPS, monitors the progress under the CEIR portal. Under her supervision 30,049 lost/stolen mobile devices were recovered, of which the last 1,000 were recovered in nine days and handed over to the victims. On average, 76 mobiles were recovered per day in the state.

To enhance user-friendliness and serve the citizens of Telangana more efficiently, the Telangana Police, in coordination with DoT has successfully integrated the CEIR portal with TS Police Citizen Portal. The citizens are requested to utilise this service on the TS Police Citizen Portal for reporting lost/missing mobile devices.

Cyber Crime SP Dr Lavanya NJP, in coordination with DOT officials, including DDG Security Hemant Rathwe, director security M Arvind Kumar, assistant director (Security Audit) Lakshmana Kumar K and inspector of IT Cell, CID Ch Suresh Babu, is overseeing the implementation of the CEIR application in the State.

ADG Railways and Road Safety I/C ADG CID Mahesh M Bhagwat appreciated SP Cyber Crime and team for the successful recovery of 30,000 mobile phones in 13 months.
