Centre announces 8th Pay Commission for govt employees, pensioners

New Delhi: In big news for the nation, the Union government on Thursday decided to set up the 8th Pay Commission to revise salaries of Central government employees and allowances of pensioners.

Over one crore Central government employees and pensioners have been eagerly anticipating the establishment of the commission to facilitate the revision of their basic pay, allowances, pension and other benefits.

The decision to set up the 8th Pay Commission was taken by prime minister Narendra Modi, I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said during a press briefing. The 8th Pay Commission will also revise the pensions and allowances of Central government retirees.

The 7th Pay Commission was set up in 2016 and its term will end in 2026. Vaishnaw said the chairman and two members of the commission will be appointed soon. The pay commissions are set up once in 10 years to recommend the government on changing the pay structure and scale of its employees.
