Centre to release Rs 100 coin to mark NT Rama Rao’s centenary

Centre to release Rs 100 coin to mark NT Rama Rao’s centenary

Hyderabad: Centre will release Rs 100 commemorative silver coin in honor of former united Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao. The coin will feature an image of Rama Rao. Since this will be a commemorative coin, it will not be in circulation in the market. The coil will be sold as a collectible by the Government of India’s Mint.

The coin is likely to be released on Rama Rao's 100th birth anniversary on May 28. However, the official confirmation is awaited.

On May 28, 2022, the family of NT Rama Rao started the yearlong centenary celebrations of the former Chief Minister. It will continue till May 28, 2023. The centenary celebrations are held once a month at 12 centers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. During that event last year, Purandeswari said they are in talks with the RBI to bring a commemorative Rs 100 coin.

NT Rama Rao was an Indian actor, filmmaker, and politician who served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years over three terms. He starred in over 300 films, predominantly in Telugu cinema, and was referred to as Viswa Vikhyatha Nata Sarwa Bhouma.

'Commemorative Coin' is issued by the Government of India Mint on specific occasions or events. From political leaders to cultural icons, the faces of famous personalities have been a part of commemorative coins from the very start. Some include Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi, Nobel Laureate and missionary Mother Teresa, former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and many more.
