Vehicles without fitness, insurance to be seized, orders SC panel after Chevella accident

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court’s Road Safety Committee, headed by Justice (Retd.) Abhay Manohar Sapre has ordered officials to seize vehicles lacking valid fitness certificates and ensure that every vehicle on the road possesses mandatory insurance, permits and fitness clearance.

During a review meeting in Hyderabad on Thursday, Sapre directed Telangana authorities to tighten enforcement of vehicle fitness and road safety norms following the recent fatal road accident near Chevella.

The committee also examined the causes of the mishap and issued a series of corrective directives to multiple departments.

Justice Sapre, along with committee member Sanjay Bandopadhyay, interacted with officials from the police, transport, mining and road infrastructure departments.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mahanti presented a detailed report on the accident’s cause, citing road design, vehicle condition and traffic violations as key factors.

Reinspection of RTC and commercial vehicles ordered

Expressing concern over poor vehicle maintenance, the committee instructed the transport department to reinspect all RTC buses and commercial vehicles operating in the region.

Road expansion and overloading controls

The committee urged NHAI officials to accelerate highway expansion projects on busy routes like Chevella, emphasising that delays increase accident risk. Mining and transport departments were also told to strictly prevent overloading from quarry sites, as heavy vehicles exceeding load limits were identified as a recurring hazard.

Road safety fund recommended

Calling for sustainable safety measures, the panel recommended that the Telangana government create a dedicated Road Safety Fund to finance enforcement, awareness, and accident prevention programmes across the state.

The committee underscored the need for joint coordination among departments to curb road accidents and enhance highway safety standards across Telangana.
