CM Revanth calls for Zero tolerance towards Child Sexual Abuse
Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has called for stringent action against those involved in sexual assaults on children, especially crimes facilitated via social media.
He assured that the Telangana government is fully prepared to take all necessary measures to protect children.
Conference on Child Protection and Rights
The Chief Minister was speaking at a state-level conference on āSupport for the Helpless ā Protection and Rights of Children from Sexual Harassmentā held at Dr. MCRHRD Institute on Saturday.
The event saw the participation of Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant, Acting Chief Justice of Telangana High Court Justice Sujoy Paul, and Justice P. Sam Koshy.
Need for Holistic Protection
Addressing the gathering, Revanth Reddy emphasised that merely curbing such heinous crimes is not enough. āThere is a need to provide legal, moral, and holistic protection to the victims,ā he said.
Bharosa Centres for Comprehensive Support
Highlighting the governmentās commitment towards the safety of women and children, he mentioned that Telangana has set up 29 Bharosa Centres across the state. These centres provide police assistance, legal and medical aid, and counselling services in a supportive environment.
First State to Establish Child-Friendly Courts
The Chief Minister pointed out that Telangana is the first state in India to establish Child-Friendly Courts through the Hyderabad-based Bharosa Centre. These courts aim to ensure speedy trial of cases while protecting the confidence and dignity of child victims and aiding their overall development.
Effective Implementation of Laws
Revanth Reddy stressed the need for better implementation of POCSO and Juvenile Acts to ensure complete protection for victims. āJustice should not be limited to court verdicts alone but should be reflected at every stage, from police stations to child welfare centres, without causing further trauma to victims,ā he said.
Justice Beyond Punishment
āJustice is not just about punishing the guilty. It is about offering hope, protection, and dignity to survivors. Measures should be taken to help children reclaim their lost childhood and ensure they are treated with respect and empathy in society,ā the Chief Minister added.
Call for Collective Efforts
He urged the judiciary, police officers, child welfare committees, and civil society to work in unison to prevent such crimes. Concluding his speech, Revanth Reddy said the conference was significant as it gave voice to the voiceless.
He appreciated the judiciary, police, Women and Child Welfare Department officials, and civil society partners for their commitment to this cause.
The inaugural session was attended by UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCaffrey, Telangana DGP Dr Jitender, officials from Telangana State Legal Services Authority, police officers, Women and Child Welfare Department officials, and representatives of various civil society organisations.
