Dating frauds, phishing, dark web: Cybercrimes increase by 57% in Telangana this year

Cybercrimes have increased by 57% in Telangana this year.

Telangana police annual report revealed that a total of 13895 cybercrimes have been registered in 2022 against 8839 in 2021.

Cyberstalking, phishing, and online fraud have topped the list.

Telangana State Police's Annual Report noted that the Cyber Crime Wing of CID is in touch with National Agencies including NTRO (National Technological Research Organization), CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team- India), Interpol, and MHA to improve monitoring and coordination in the detection of cybercrimes.

Cybercrime in the tri-commissionerate area also saw a huge spike.

Hyderabad

In Hyderabad Commissionerate, the number of cases registered in 2022 was 2249 against 2066 in 2021.

"From traditional crimes like robbery and dacoity, people have now moved to cybercrimes involving high-end technologies including phishing, OTP frauds, matrimony frauds, cryptocurrency-related crimes, cheating through loan apps, dark web crimes, etc. These crimes are very hard to investigate. Hyderabad police is improving its cybercrime investigation tools and manpower," said CP CV Anand.

Cyberabad

Cyberabad Commission's Annual Report revealed Cybercrimes have increased by 25.85%. However, the total number of accused nabbed is relatively higher as compared to 2021. In 2022, 2924 persons were arrested. In 2021 only 707 persons were arrested.

Various kinds of cyber crimes were reported in the Cyberabad Commissionerate. Advertisement Portal Fraud (881), Investment Fraud (629), matrimonial and dating fraud (96), and trading fraud (51) topped the list.

As part of their 2023 goals, the Cyberabad Commissionerate aims to achieve 40% increase in convictions in grave cases, create a special registry of sexual offenders and launch an awareness campaign to encourage people to Dial 1930 for reporting Cyber Crime

Rachakonda

Similar to Hyderabad and Cyberabad Commissionerates, the Rachakonda Commissionerate also saw an increase in cybercrimes.

The number of cybercrimes has increased by 66% in the Rachakonda Commissionerate. In 2022, 2049 cases were reported against 1360 in 2021.

57 job or visa frauds, 56 social media, 43 phishing crimes and more have been reported under the Cyber Crime category.
