`Deepfakes a major social threat’: Chiranjeevi after his fake porn videos go viral

Hyderabad: Expressing grave concern over the rising misuse of digital technology, film actor and former Union Minister K Chiranjeevi on Friday described deepfakes as a “major social threat” that could cause widespread damage to individuals and society.

A few days ago, Chiranjeevi filed a complaint with Hyderabad Cybercrime Police after his AI-generated pornographic deepfake videos were circulated online.

The actor said the fabricated clips have not only damaged his public image but also violated his constitutional right to privacy and dignity.

He revealed that he had already brought the issue to the attention of DGP Shivadhar Reddy and Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, who were treating it as a matter of serious concern.

“Deepfakes are like a double-edged sword. They can destroy reputations and spread dangerous misinformation. But there’s no need for people to panic, Telangana Police are acting decisively,” he said.

The actor was speaking at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) celebrations organised by the Telangana Police at Necklace Road.

Calls for legal framework to tackle cyber threats

Chiranjeevi said the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and digital tools had created new challenges that needed immediate attention.

He urged the government to consider specific laws to curb deepfake misuse and cybercrimes, warning that inaction could lead to serious consequences in the future.

“A legal framework is essential to protect both celebrities and ordinary citizens from such digital manipulations,” Chiranjeevi said.

Praises Telangana Police for Public-Friendly approach

Lauding the Telangana Police, Chiranjeevi said the state’s law enforcement system was strong, efficient, and people-oriented. “Police in Telangana have become more approachable and supportive. Citizens should not hesitate to seek their help,” he said.

CP Sajjanar: “Deepfake cases under close watch

Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said his department had taken the deepfake issue very seriously and was tracing the digital origins of such crimes. “We are tracking cybercriminal networks and enhancing public awareness. People should stay alert but not anxious,” he said.

He also cautioned against digital arrest scams, investment frauds, and the growing trend of mule accounts, warning that even minors were getting trapped for small sums of money.

Task Force SI suspended for negligence

The Commissioner confirmed that Central Zone Task Force Sub-Inspector D. Srikanth Goud had been suspended for negligence in duty. “The main accused, Vuppalapati Satish, wanted in CID and GST fraud cases, is absconding. A special team is on the job to nab him soon,” Sajjanar stated.

Police reaffirm commitment to Public Safety

DGP Shivadhar Reddy said the Telangana Police remained dedicated to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens. He called on everyone to uphold the spirit of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, promoting unity and collective responsibility.

“Public cooperation and unity are the cornerstones of a safe and harmonious society,” the DGP said.
