Why posting obscene videos fetches likes

New Delhi: Filming a video and posting it on social media has now become a trend.

Internet is flooded with viral videos of activities happening while traveling on metro rails. While people are mostly seen filming obscene videos and sharing them on social media, the influencers post Instagram reels on dancing on the metro.

Obscene videos

From a kissing couple to a man masturbating beside a woman on a metro rail have shocked the netizens in the last few months.

A young couple kissing each other while sitting on the floor of a metro coach has gone viral for all the wrong reasons. Posting the video on social media, people have appealed to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to take action against those indulging in such obscene activities.

While such videos trend over social media, there are always mixed reactions from the netizens. In the recent video, a few social media users reacted in a humorous vein, saying that he was "giving CPR to her, what is wrong with that?". In contrast, some of them questioned the officials to change the name of Delhi Metro to Porn Hub.

Filming without permission

Two days ago, a video of a couple sitting together in Delhi Metro went viral after a tweet was posted by a user Abhinav Thakur tweeting Feeling Awkward. But the internet was quick to school him.

The video shows the couple were sitting, and the woman's head was on the man's shoulder. Many internet users commented on the video, questioning Thakur for recording their video without permission, and posting it on a social media platform. The users tagged Delhi Police, and Metro officials to take action on Thakur.

Why filming?

According to Dr. Purnima Nagaraja, Holistic Mental health professional and therapist at Dhrithi Wellness Clinic, "Obscenity has always been attractive, particularly to youngsters. The two-year pandemic has made it worse because people had nothing to do. Watching videos has become a norm of the day."

"There is a special market apparently for reality videos where there are couples who post their videos. It is not a new trend. There are states where youth take videos of girls being molested and sell them for Rs 500," she added.

Dr. Purnima said: "It is a taste for something forbidden. We don't tell our children about normal sexual process, and the children get knowledge from social media. Filming and posting any videos like kissing in the metro, or couple walking hand in hand, people try to make such videos viral and earn money."

"Also, a fascination for such activities makes people do copycat videos After a two-year pandemic, the setback has given rise to all such kinds of activities and ideas to post videos and trends", she said.

Instagram reels

In January, a video of a woman dancing on a seat using a handrail in the Delhi Metro was posted on Instagram by Aparna Devyal. The video shows Aparna swinging while holding the handrail, and later standing and dancing on the metro seat. While her video got many likes, some users advised her not to record such videos, which would provoke others to do the same on public transport.

In another incident, an Instagram user Thinlay Bhutia posted a video dancing on a Delhi metro. A girl can be seen dancing inside the coach of a Delhi Metro train, surrounded by people, while her friend films. None of them reacted to her actions.

People know such activities are not to be done on metro rails but want to try. One such incident happened in May when an Instagram user filmed a video of herself dancing in a metro. Instagram user itz_officialroy was seen dancing to Kaka's Punjabi song 'Shape' inside the metro while the public watched her. She also wrote a note posting the video saying, "I know this is not allowed inside Delhi Metro, but I did it for the first time".

In April, an Instagram user Avnikarish posted a video of dancing on a metro station platform in a red saree. She was seen dancing to a Bhojpuri song while the surrounding area was isolated.

No more drama- cops are beside you

After a series of objectionable videos and reels surfaced, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) decided to increase security and surveillance by deploying flying squads in civil dresses inside the metro.

According to the reports, DMRC will increase patrolling inside trains. While there are CCTV cameras in the coaches on all lines except some old trains on the Red line, DRMC said that they will upgrade with CCTVs in the ongoing refurbishment process. These cameras, along with the cameras at Metro stations, will be used to monitor objectionable activities.

DMRC asks commuters to report

Officials of DMRC have asked the commuters to report such incidents to the "nearest available metro staff/CISF immediately so that appropriate action can be taken. They appealed to commuters to "refrain from indulging in such obscene activities and maintain social etiquette/decorum while traveling in a mass public transport system like the Delhi Metro.

"We expect commuters to behave responsibly while using the Delhi Metro and follow all social etiquette and protocols acceptable in society. Commuters should not indulge in any indecent/obscene activity that may cause discomfort or offend the sensibilities of fellow commuters," said DMRC in a statement.

DMRC's Operations & Maintenance Act lists indecency as a punishable offence under Section 59.
