Do crystals have healing properties? Gen Z says yes, doctors stay sceptical

Hyderabad: In recent years, crystals have emerged as a popular trend among young people for their perceived importance in self-care and spirituality. These beautiful stones, once seen as niche or esoteric, have now found a broader audience, particularly among millennials and Gen Z.

The rise in crystal use is closely tied to the growing interest in alternative healing practices and the increasing emphasis on mental health and well-being.

Crystals as tools for ā€˜healing and spiritual growthā€™

Crystals are believed to possess unique energies that can influence the mind, body and spirit.

ā€œCrystals are more than just beautiful stones; they are powerful tools for healing. Each crystal has its unique vibration and when used correctly, they can help us align our energies and find balance in our lives,ā€ said Sonali Saujani, a crystal master healer based in Hyderabad.

Advocates of crystal healing argue that different crystals have specific properties that can aid in emotional balance, physical healing, and spiritual growth.

For example, it is said that amethyst is often used for its purported calming and protective effects, while rose quartz is known as the ā€˜stone of loveā€™, believed to enhance self-love and emotional healing.

Role of social media in popularising crystal culture

The crystal trend has gained significant momentum on social media platforms like Instagram, and Pinterest.

Influencers and celebrities often share videos of their crystal collections, daily rituals and the benefits they experience, making crystals more attractive to a broader audience.

These platforms are filled with aesthetically pleasing images of crystals, often accompanied by captions that emphasise their spiritual and healing properties.

Dr Vinod Kumar, a psychologist specialising in the impact of social media on mental health, said, ā€œThe visibility of crystals on social media has certainly contributed to their popularity among younger generations. These platforms not only provide a space for people to share their experiences but also create a sense of community around crystal use, which can be very appealing, especially in todayā€™s digital age.ā€

Science and scepticism behind crystal healing

While many young people are enthusiastic about the potential benefits of crystals, the scientific community remains sceptical.

There is little to no scientific evidence to support claims that crystals can influence ā€˜energy fieldsā€™ or improve health. The placebo effect is often cited as a possible explanation for the positive experiences reported by crystal users.

ā€œEven if the benefits of crystals are largely due to the placebo effect, that doesnā€™t diminish their value. If holding a piece of rose quartz gives someone a sense of calm or helps them focus on self-love, then itā€™s serving a meaningful purpose. The mind is powerful and sometimes believing in something can be enough to bring about positive change,ā€ said Dr Vinod Kumar, offering a balanced view of the popularity of crystals.

Crystals in modern self-care rituals

For many young people, incorporating crystals into their daily routines has become a form of self-care. These rituals often include meditating with crystals, placing them under pillows to promote restful sleep, or carrying them throughout the day as a source of comfort and strength.

Spiritualist and life coach Madhulika Appasani explained, ā€œCrystals serve as physical reminders of the intentions we set for ourselves. Whether itā€™s for protection, love or clarity, carrying a crystal can help you stay focused on your goals and keep your energy aligned with your desires.ā€

Future of crystals in popular culture

As the trend continues to grow, it is likely that crystals will remain a staple in the self-care and wellness practices of young people. The combination of ancient beliefs and modern technology has allowed for a resurgence of this age-old practice, reimagined for a new generation.

However, experts advise caution.

Saujani added, ā€œWhile crystals can be a powerful tool for personal growth, itā€™s important to remember that they should not replace professional medical advice or treatment. They are best used as a complement to other wellness practices.ā€
