Eluru: Doctors at Government General Hospital (GGH) in Eluru who performed C-section for a woman in April left a two-inch artery forceps inside her stomach. The incident came to light after an X-ray scan showed an instrument in her stomach.

The victim, who is a native of S Kothapalli in Pedapadu mandal of Eluru district, underwent C-section delivery on April 19, 2023. After that, she experienced severe stomach pain at regular intervals.

According to Eluru Government hospital superintendent Sasidhar, "Post delivery, the woman experienced stomach pain at regular intervals. On August 8, she approached Eluru Government Hospital, and it was found to be a case of intestinal obstruction. She was referred to Vijayawada Hospital for better treatment."

The woman was admitted to the hospital on August 10, 2023. After observing her health, the doctors suggested an X-ray and CT scan of her abdomen. The scanning reports identified a two-inch artery forceps in her stomach.

"At the time of delivery, the doctors who operated might have left artery forceps in her stomach. Since then, she has complained of a severe stomach ache and consulted doctors in Eluru. She was successfully operated on the woman and removed the damaged intestine from her stomach," Sasidhar said.

"The woman is currently out of danger and is being treated at Vijayawada Government Hospital. According to the doctors at Vijayawada government hospital, as the forceps are sterilised, the woman's health condition did not worsen immediately. Timely treatment saved her after she experienced intestinal obstruction saved her," said Vijayawada GGH Doctor Prabhakar

On this incident, Eluru District Collector V Prasanna Venkatesh ordered a detailed inquiry with the District Coordinator of Hospital Services (DCHS) and directed him to submit his report on Wednesday.

Staff nurse should keep a count of instruments

According to a senior doctor at Vijayawada Government Hospital, "After every surgery, it is the duty of the staff nurse to keep a count of the instruments used and give the number to the concerned surgeon. In this incident, we are not sure what went wrong."

"This is one of the rarest incidents, and it cannot be said as doctors' negligence. An enquiry report can be told what exactly happened," said the doctor.
