Hyderabad: The Telangana State Election Commission has directed the director-general of police to find the factual position and lodge FIR urgently in the case of a fake letter published in the name of the Election Commission. The letter said that the election body had cancelled the Dalit Bandhu scheme after receiving a letter from Eatala Rajender.

The fake letter, signed by undersecretary and public information officer (PIO) Gurupreeth Singh, says the Election Commission received various complaints from candidates and political parties with reference to a letter sent to the EC by Eatala Rajender on 24 September. "In this regard, the Election Commission considered the Scheme is under Violation of MCC and directed to Govemment officials till election code is lifted (sic)," the letter read.

On 18 October, the Election Commission had directed the state government to defer the implementation of the Dalit Bandhu scheme till the completion of the Huzurabad by-election to be held on 30 October.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao had launched the scheme on 16 August to empower Dalits in the state. The scheme offers Rs. 10 lakh to each Dalit family to help them become financially reliant.
