Final polling figures: AP records 81.86% voter turnout, highest among all states so far

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh registered a total polling percentage of 81.86 per cent including postal ballot votes for the 25 Lok Sabha seats and 175 Assembly constituencies, according to the chief electoral officer Mukesh Kumar Meena.

This is the highest voting percentage compared to any state which has gone to the polls during the four phases of voting so far.

The polling percentage rose from 79.77 in 2019 to 81.86 per cent in the Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls held in the state simultaneously on May 13. Several polling stations allowed voters, who were already standing in the queue by 6 pm on Monday, to exercise their franchise beyond the scheduled polling hours, leading to late night polling.

According to the Election Commission (ECI), 454 candidates contested for the 25 Lok Sabha seats and 2,387 candidates in the Assembly polls.

Parliamentary voting

As per the data, a total of 3,33,40,560 crore voters cast their vote for 25 Lok Sabha seats.

The highest voting percentage was recorded in Ongole with 87.06 per cent, while the lowest was recorded in Visakhapatnam with 71.11 per cent.

“Compared to the previous elections, Visakhapatnam saw a four per cent increase in voting. In 2019, the voting percentage was 67 per cent,” said Mukesh.




AP Assembly voting

A total of 3,33,50,332 crore voter cast their vote for the 175 Assembly constituencies in the state.




While Darsi recorded the highest percentage of 90.91 per cent, the lowest was recorded in Tirupati at 63.32 per cent.

Candidates under house arrest

Speaking about poll violence that occurred between YSRCP and TDP workers, especially in four areas – Tadipatri, Macherla, Chandragiri and Narsannapeta – the CEO said, “We are in contact with the DGP and have deployed additional forces in these areas particularly. The police also imposed Section 144 across Palnadu district. The party candidates are also responsible for whatever violence happened during the polls. So, the candidates have also been put under house arrest to avoid more such poll violence.”

On Wednesday, the police kept YSRCP MLAs P Ramakrishna Reddy from Macherla and Kasu Mahesh Reddy from Gurajala under house arrest to restore law and order in the region.

ECI expresses ire on poll violence from TDP-YSRCP clashes

Following a series of violent clashes in Palnadu, Chandragiri and other parts of the state, the ECI has expressed anger and summoned chief secretary Dr KS Jawahar Reddy and director-general of police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta. The ECI asked the officials to appear directly before it in New Delhi and explain the situation.

The counting of votes is scheduled for June 4.
