Guntur: An organ trade gang harvested the kidney of a poor auto-rickshaw driver from Guntur after promising him Rs 30 lakh.

However, after removing his kidney, the 31-year-old was paid only Rs 1.1 lakh. Identified as G Madhu Babu of Guntur town he was approached by a gang in November 2023.

According to Madhu Babu, his father died by suicide due to financial problems during his young age. With low earnings, he became debt-ridden lending money from loan apps and decided to sell one kidney to pay off the debts and give his wife and children a good future.

"One man met me and spoke about selling one kidney to earn money and told me about a website. I searched on Facebook and came to know that they require O +ve and B +ve blood group person between the age of 31-33 years. So when I replied, I got a call from Bhasha from Vijayawada who already donated once, and said they would give Rs 30 lakh," said Madhu speaking to the media.

Madhu went to Vijayawada and met another person Venkat, a mediator for the patient. "After all the tests cross-matched with the patient, I was asked to change my address as the patient's relative because I cannot donate otherwise. After making all proofs and videos, I donated a kidney on June 15, 2024, after which they did not give me money. The family asked me to donate my left kidney but they took my right kidney, which I knew after the surgery," Madhu added.

The surgery was performed in Vijaya Super Speciality hospital in Vijayawada in June. From November 2023 to June 2024, Madhu was paid around Rs 1.1 lakh as expenses.

Madhu approached the police and requested to nab the gang. He said the gang has cheated more than six persons.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha reacted to the complaint of Madhu Babu. She spoke to SPs of Guntur and Krishna districts and asked them not to spare one involved in this kidney racket. Anitha also asked the SPs to initiate stern action against them and do justice for Madhu Babu
