Hyderabad: Heatwave Alert in Telangana as IMD predicts temperature up to 44°C on March 15

Hyderabad: Temperatures in several Telangana districts are expected to range between 41°C and 44°C over the next two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow (heatwave) alert for March 14 and 15, warning of heatwave conditions in Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Rajanna Sircilla and Peddapalli.

IMD issues heatwave warning

The IMD has stated that temperatures in these districts will remain high until March 16, after which a slight drop is expected.

Speaking to NewsMeter, meteorologist KS Sridhar said, “In Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Karimnagar and Warangal, the mercury is expected to hover between 36°C and 40°C during this period.”

“Heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in isolated pockets. We advise people to avoid exposure to direct sunlight between 12 pm and 3 pm and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses,” Sridhar added.

Understanding heatwave conditions

As per the IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature in plains reaches 40°C or more, with a departure from normal of 4.5°C to 6.4°C. A severe heatwave is declared when the temperature exceeds 47°C or the departure from normal is more than 6.4°C.

Public urged to take precautions

The Telangana State Disaster Management Authority (TSDMA) has issued a public advisory urging residents to follow safety measures to avoid heat-related illnesses. The key recommendations include:

• Stay indoors during peak heat hours (12 pm to 3 pm).

• Drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.

• Wear light, loose-fitting, and light-coloured clothing to reflect heat.

• Use umbrellas, caps, and sunglasses if stepping out is necessary.

• Apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

• Eat hydrating foods such as fruits, cucumbers, and yogurt.

• Check on vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children and outdoor workers.

• Avoid strenuous physical activities during the hottest hours.

• Keep homes cool by using curtains, fans or air conditioning.

The IMD has recommended using its Mausam, Damini and Meghdoot apps for real-time weather alerts. Residents can also follow the Meteorological Centre Hyderabad on social media for the latest updates.
