Telangana rains: Siddipet, Kamareddy, Medak record over 200 mm; low-lying areas flooded

Hyderabad: Telangana witnessed widespread heavy rainfall overnight. This follows a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered an extreme weather event across several districts.

Central Telangana districts, including Siddipet, Kamareddy, Medak, and Yadadri Bhongir, reported rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some locations, leading to flooding in low-lying areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that the system is likely to intensify into a depression within the next 12 hours and cross the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coasts by Tuesday forenoon.

Extreme Rainfall in Central Telangana

Several districts in Central Telangana recorded exceptional rainfall between Sunday night and early Monday morning.

• Gouraram in Siddipet district reported the highest at 236 mm.

• Mulugu mandal (Siddipet) received 186.5 mm, while Islampur near Tupran (Medak outskirts of Hyderabad) recorded 179.5 mm.

• Pitlam (Kamareddy) measured 175.5 mm, Kowdipally (Medak) 173.5 mm, Kangti (Sangareddy) 169.8 mm, and Shankarampet (Medak) 165.5 mm.

Other heavy-hit locations included Addagudur (Yadadri Bhongir, 164.8 mm), Hasanpalle–Nizamsagar (Kamareddy, 164.5 mm), Begupet (Rayapole, Siddipet, 163.3 mm), and Damarancha (Medak, 160.8 mm).

Rainfall in Hyderabad and Surrounding Districts

While central Hyderabad recorded light to moderate showers, the city’s outskirts and neighboring districts faced heavier rainfall.

• Hyder Nagar, Kukatpally (Medchal-Malkajgiri) registered 46.3 mm, the highest in the Hyderabad urban belt.

• Vinayak Nagar (Malkajgiri) followed with 45 mm, while Gajularamaram (Medchal-Malkajgiri) recorded 43.8 mm.

• Other stations included Kapra (42.5 mm), University of Hyderabad campus (42.5 mm), Kushaiguda (42.3 mm), Chandanagar (41 mm), and Shamshiguda (40.5 mm).

Rainfall figures from surrounding rural districts were far higher. In Medak, Islampur (178 mm), Kowdipally (172 mm), Chinna Shankarampet (164 mm), and Damarancha (158 mm) were severely affected. Kangti in Sangareddy received 166 mm, while several mandals across the erstwhile Medak district crossed the 150 mm mark.

Meteorologist K. S. Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter, explained the situation: ā€œThe well-marked low pressure over the Bay of Bengal is showing signs of intensification. Central Telangana districts are experiencing very heavy rainfall due to the system’s circulation, and this will likely continue until the depression crosses the coast.ā€

Administrative Measures

Heavy rainfall led to inundation in several towns and villages, paralysing movement in low-lying areas. District administrations in Siddipet, Kamareddy, and Medak have set up control rooms and issued advisories urging residents to step out only for urgent needs.

Outlook

The IMD has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall across Telangana over the next 48 hours, with isolated very heavy rainfall in the north and central districts. Hyderabad is expected to see intermittent showers accompanied by cloudy skies and damp conditions.

Officials have stressed preparedness and vigilance as the low-pressure pressure intensifies, urging citizens to follow official weather advisories and remain alert in waterlogged areas.
