Hyderabad: Tragedy strikes Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra at Ramanthapur; 5 electrocuted, 4 injured

Hyderabad: Five devotees were electrocuted and four others sustained injuries when a chariot in Sri Krishna Shobha Yatra touched an overhead wire at Gokul Nagar, Ramanthapur, under the Uppal Police Station limits.

The mishap occurred towards the end of the procession, organized as part of the Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations.

According to Uppal police, a vehicle carrying the chariot came into contact with an overhead high-tension power line after devotees attempted to push it. As the chariot moved forward, it reportedly touched the live wire, resulting in a fatal electric shock.

Local people shifted the injured to nearby hospitals. However, the five victims were declared dead on arrival. Their bodies were later moved to the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination.

The deceased were identified as Krishna alias Diamond Yadav, 21, a resident of Old Ramanthapur; Srikanth Reddy, 35; Suresh Yadav, 34, also a resident of Old Ramanthapur; Rudra Vikas, 39; and Rajendra Reddy, 45.

One of the injured continues to receive treatment at a government hospital, another has been transferred to a private facility in Nampally, and two others are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident. Further details are awaited.

CM, Minister express Condolences

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Minister for BC Welfare and Transport Ponnam Prabhakar expressed deep shock over the mishap. They sought details about the circumstances that led to the accident and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

Ponnam Prabhakar enquired about the condition of the injured and instructed officials to provide them with the best possible medical treatment. He also cautioned people to remain vigilant around electric wires, especially during heavy rains.

KTR condemns incident, demands government support

BRS Working President KT Rama Rao also expressed anguish over the tragedy. He described the deaths of Krishna Yadav, Srikanth Reddy, Suresh Yadav, Rudra Vikas, and Rajendra Reddy as ā€œheart-wrenching.ā€

KTR extended condolences to the victims’ families and urged the government to extend financial and moral support. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured and appealed to the authorities to ensure advanced medical care.

Call for preventive measures

Highlighting the need for public safety during processions, KTR stressed that the government must take strict preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
