Hyderabad: Gachibowli Prism pub shootout hero HC Marri Venkata Reddy wins gallantry award
Hyderabad: Ignoring a bullet injury to his leg, Cyberabad Police Head Constable Marri Venkata Reddy overpowered and arrested a notorious criminal after the latter opened fire on police near a pub in Gachibowli.
In recognition of his bravery, Venkata Reddy has been selected for the gallantry medal on the occasion of Republic Day 2026.
The incident occurred in February 2025 near the Prism Pub, Gachibowli, when the accused, armed with a firearm, opened fire on police personnel while attempting to escape. The criminal, identified as Prabhakar alias Rahul Reddy, was finally subdued after a tense struggle.
Gunfire during attempted arrest
Prabhakar (30), a native of Nanakramguda, is a hardened offender with over 125 criminal cases registered against him across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He had been absconding since 2022, after escaping from police escort while being shifted from Visakhapatnam Central Jail.
Based on credible intelligence that Prabhakar would be visiting the Prism Pub in Gowlidoddi, Head Constable Venkata Reddy, along with constables Pradeep Reddy and Veeraswamy, rushed to the spot and attempted to apprehend him.
When the police team asked him to surrender, the accused panicked, pulled out a gun, and fired two rounds at the personnel.
Shot but unyielding
One of the bullets struck Head Constable Venkata Reddy on the left foot, causing bleeding. However, undeterred by the injury, he continued the operation, charging at the accused along with his colleagues and successfully restraining him after a brief but intense struggle.
Thanks to the swift and fearless response of the police team, a major threat to public safety was averted, officials said.
Gallantry medal for exceptional bravery
Venkata Reddy, who has served in the police department for over 20 years, is known for his commitment and courage. He has earlier played a key role in the arrest of several dangerous criminals.
Recognising his exemplary bravery and devotion to duty, the Central Government has announced the award of the Medal for Gallantry to him as part of the Republic Day 2026 honours.
Case registered, probe underway
Police have registered cases against the accused under sections related to attempt to murder and the Arms Act. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the weapon and the accused’s activities during his period of absconding.
