Hyderabad: The Banjara Hills Police has arrested six persons in connection with the death of a woman and hospitalisation of over 40 others after allegedly eating momos here, police said.
The six persons were identified as Armaan (23), Sajid Hussain (20), Md. Raees (23), Md. Sharukh (29), Md. Haneef (21) and Md. Rajik (19). They operate food stalls and reside in the Chintal Basthi area of Khairtabad and are native to the Kishanganj district in Bihar.
Following complaints from the family members of the victims, two cases were registered on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the BNS Act.
Case details
On October 25, Reshma Begum (31), and her younger daughter bought momos from a roadside food stall operated by the accused vendors at a vegetable market in Singada Kunta, Banjara Hills. After consuming the momos at home, Reshma Begum, her two daughters and other customers began experiencing food poisoning symptoms, such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
Unfortunately, even after Reshma Begum was quickly taken to NIMS Hospital, she was pronounced dead on October 27. On October 28, Reshma Begum’s brother Farooq Hussain filed a complaint with the Banjara Hills police about the incident. In his complaint, Hussain wrote about the momos they had consumed and how her health deteriorated from then on. His elder sister Reshma Begum was survived by three children.
On October 25, Resha Begum and her children consumed the momos prepared by Arman at a food stall operated by Sajid Hussain and Shahrukh and some others near a vegetable market in Singadakunta.
On October 27, Resha Begum’s health became critical. Immediately, she was shifted to NIMS hospital, Panjagutta. There the doctors declared her dead, while her two daughters Rimsha, Rafia and other customers were hospitalised. The police said that Arman, Sajid Hussain and Shahrukh adulterated the momos, making them unfit for consumption. They sold the same to the customers that caused Resha Begum’s death and made Farooq Hussain's nieces and other persons sick. Hence, he requested the police to take the necessary action as per the law.
A case was registered under U/s 105, 110, 274, 275, 125(a) R/W 3(5) BNS of Banjara Hills Police Station, Hyderabad and the six accused were sent to judicial remand.

Telangana govt prohibits production, sale of Mayonnaise for one year
The Telangana government on Wednesday prohibited the production, storage and sale of Mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs for one year with immediate effect following complaints of it being a suspected cause of food poisoning.
The state Commissioner of Food Safety issued an order to this effect.
"As per the observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, Mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents in the past few months," the order said.
Mayonnaise (or Mayo) is a thick, creamy sauce made by emulsifying egg yolks with oil, often flavoured with vinegar or lemon juice.
It is commonly used as a side dish or dressing in sandwiches, salads, appetizers, snacks, shawarma and various dishes.
