Hyderabad: After a doctor was killed in Kerala, another attack on doctor was reported in NIMS, Hyderabad, when a resident doctor of the Nephrology department was beaten by a patient's attendants.

Dr Rahul who was attacked was a final-year nephrology resident at NIMS Hospital.

The incident happened in early hours of Thursday, after a 62-year-old patient who was admitted in the hospital at night died suffering with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). While he was battered and abused by patient attendants, over 20 people reportedly encircled Dr Rahul from the department of nephrology.

The inquiry being conducted by Dr. Rahul's coworkers aims to pinpoint what caused the event

Speaking to News Meter, Dr. Prasanna, the victim's colleague said, "The incident happened early on Thursday when there was very little security at the hospital premises. It's awful that the patient attendants assaulted and shoved our colleague. What if someone nearby assaulted him with anything else that put the doctor's life in danger? We are right now figuring out what caused the situation."

According to Dr. G. Srinivas, Advisor, Telangana Junior Physicians Association (TJUDA), "Despite several attacks on doctors in the past, there has been no safety measures taken for the safety of the doctors. The state gave the GO, but no safe environment or SPF force has yet been appointed despite that".

Similar incidents occurred in 2018 and 2019

In 2018 Dr. Md. Irfan from NIMS was allegedly attacked by relatives of a 46-year-old patient, Aruna, who died during treatment.

In May 2019, A senior medical officer, Dr K. Anvesh, working at the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Night duty, was allegedly assaulted by four attendants of a patient.
