Hyderabad: A 19-year-old youth hacked his mother’s live-in partner to death after he learned the techniques by watching crime videos on YouTube, in Jeedimetla.

Identified as Sai Ratnam, he, along with his mother Arunaa, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody for murdering 40-year-old Shiva Reddy.

Police said the duo had meticulously planned the crime and attempted to dispose of the body in a plastic drum.

Harassment led to conspiracy

Disclosing the case details before the media here, Quthbullapur Zone DCP Koti Reddy said that Arunaa, a native of Sangareddy district, had been living with Shiva Reddy, who hailed from Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district, after the death of her husband. The family was residing in Chintal.

The DCP said that Shiva Reddy was addicted to alcohol and frequently harassed both Arunaa and her son, Sai Ratnam. Unable to bear the alleged harassment, the mother and son allegedly conspired to eliminate him.

Knife procured from nearby mutton shop

"During the investigation, we found that Sai Ratnam had watched multiple online crime videos to understand how murders are carried out and how evidence could be destroyed. As part of the plan, he allegedly brought a knife from a nearby mutton shop before executing the murder," DCP Koti Reddy said.

On Sunday night, after Shiva Reddy went to sleep around 11 pm, Sai Ratnam allegedly attacked him with a knife and slit his throat, killing him on the spot.

Attempt to destroy evidence

Elaborating further, the DCP said the accused attempted to erase evidence by disposing of blood-stained clothes in a nearby drain.

The duo later stuffed the body into a plastic drum and planned to secretly transport and dump it elsewhere.

However, the murder came to light after Sai Ratnam reportedly called a friend to help move the drum. Shocked after seeing the body inside, the friend immediately approached the police and informed them about the incident.

Photos, videos recovered from phone

"We also found that the accused had allegedly recorded photos and videos related to the murder on a mobile phone.

During the examination of Sai Ratnam’s phone, police recovered several images and video clips connected to the crime," the DCP said.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway, he added.
