ICFAI assault case: 9 staffers booked for negligence; college begins online classes

Hyderabad: The Shankarpally police on Monday booked a case against nine members of the ICFAI Business School (IBS) management team for negligence after a student was brutally assaulted in one of the hostels on the campus.

A case has been registered under section 41A of the India Penal Code (IPC). Section 41A is the notice of appearance before the police in all cases where the arrest of a person is not required.

On Monday, the Cyberabad police tweeted, "With reference to the crime reported at IBS Shankarpally, 8 accused have been arrested and remanded. In addition, legal action was initiated against 9 members of college management for negligence." The Shankarpally police have arrested and remanded eight students who assaulted the student and shot a video of the incident on 1 November.

The video of the seniors harassing the victim was shared widely on Twitter and has raised concerns among students and parents across the country.

Online classes

ICFAI has announced online classes for the next one week considering the safety of the students. According to sources, the police have warned the college authorities that there could be clashes between different student groups on the campus and hence the authorities decided to start online classes for a week. Meanwhile, police were deployed on the campus on Monday.

The incident

The victim lodged a complaint on November 11 after which the Shankarpally police arrested and remanded eight students who assaulted the student and shot a video of the incident on 1 November. A case was been booked against the students under sections 307 (Attempt to murder), 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt), 450 (Trespass in order to commit an offence), 506 (Criminal Intimidation), and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of a common intention).

The complainant, a BBA-LLB student at ICFAI Business School, claimed that 12 people physically and sexually abused him in his dorm room. According to the victim's complaint, 15 to 20 people stormed into his hostel room at 3:30 on 1 November. In his complaint, he said they "ganged up on me, kicked my testicles, humiliated me, recorded it, and threatened to beat me to death if I didn't take my pants down."
