Iconic Hard Rock Cafe shuts 10 franchise outlets across India, including Hyderabad
New Delhi/Hyderabad: Hard Rock Cafe has officially closed its 10 franchise outlets in major Indian cities, including Hyderabad, as it terminates the partnership with JSM Corporation.
Only the Goa outlet, which is of the brand, will be functioning, according to a statement released by the company.
Sad news for music lovers
The sudden closure announcement has got many in the restaurant industry unhappy, as the music-themed restaurant has a good fan base in the country.
The move marks a significant shift for the global brand, which has been a staple of India’s urban nightlife for over two decades.
The nationwide shutdown
The closure, effective immediately as of March 16 (Monday), impacted 10 key locations across seven major metropolitan hubs. Fans of the brand’s signature burgers and rock-and-roll memorabilia found doors locked in:
Bengaluru: St. Marks Road, Whitefield, and Kempegowda International Airport.
Hyderabad: Banjara Hills and HITEC City.
New Delhi: Connaught Place.
Chennai: Nungambakkam.
Pune, Kolkata and Chandigarh.
Parent company Hard Rock International confirmed that the decision stems from the ending of its franchise agreements with JSM Corporation. While the specific reasons for the fallout remain private, the shift leaves a massive void in prime commercial real estate across the country.
A legacy unplugged
Hard Rock Cafe entered the Indian market in the early 2000s, quickly becoming a cultural landmark for live music and Western-style dining.
Under the management of JSM Corporation, the brand expanded rapidly, catering to a growing middle class and the corporate IT crowds in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
“The closure may affect hundreds of employees and local supply vendors who have been part of the Hard Rock ecosystem for years,” noted a hospitality industry analyst. “However, these are prime urban locations. We expect new international brands or local hospitality ventures to quickly move into these high-value spaces.”
Goa Hard Rock Hotel stays
While the cafes have gone dark, the brand hasn’t completely exited the subcontinent. The Hard Rock Hotel Goa, located in the popular tourist hub of Calangute, remains open and fully operational.
The company clarified that the Goa property operates under a separate management agreement and is not connected to the JSM Corporation partnership, ensuring that travellers can still get their ‘rock star’ fix in the coastal state.
What comes next?
For now, the future of the Hard Rock Cafe brand in mainland India remains uncertain.
Industry experts suggest that Hard Rock International may eventually seek a new master franchisee or consider a direct-investment model to relaunch.
