In a first, Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau introduces instant drug detection tests which give results in 5 minutes

Hyderabad: Telangana police have introduced new instant drug detection tests that give results in just five minutes akin to the drunken driving test.

Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau (TANB), a separate vertical of the Telangana Police, introduced ABON (Urine kit) and Dragers to help speed up drug tests on suspects.

In less than five minutes, 19 types of drugs can be identified by urine examination. Seven types of drugs can be identified by saliva test if the suspect has consumed any narcotic substance. So far, the department has used it on a few people. In 9 such cases, the drug test turned out to be positive.

Speaking to NewsMeter, Director TSANB Sandeep Sandhilya said: “Earlier in drug cases, the suspect’s urine and saliva would be collected and sent to the laboratory. It would take days to get the reports. Also, it was found that suspects would evade immediate tests. They would take test after the drugs are flushed out from the body. About the ABON urine cup and Dragers, the test and results are instant. The department doesn’t need any special permission to test an individual. Based on crucial inputs, the sleuths are authorized to test individuals at any given place. It is similar to drunken driving tests. The legal process will follow post results.”

The equipment are the same used in tournaments like the Olympics and other international sporting events.

Explained: How does it work?

ABON urine cup test kit is a urine-based test for multiple drugs. It is a rapid one-step screen test for the simultaneous, qualitative detection of multiple drugs and metabolites in human urine. This unit can be utilized for qualitative detection of the following drugs without the need for instruments.

Amphetamine (AMP)

Barbiturates (BAR)

Benzodiazepines (BZO)

Buprenorphine (BUP)

Cocaine (COC)

Marijuana (THC)

Methadone (MTD)

Methamphetamine (MET)

Methylene dioxin methamphetamine (MDMA)

Morphine (MOP)

Opiate (OP)

Oxycodone (OXY)

Phencyclidine (PCP)

Propoxyphene (PPX)

Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA)

Tramadol (TRA)

Ketamine (KET)

18) Cotinine (COT)

Fentanyl (FTY)

Directions for use:

Remove the cup from the sealed pouch.

Remove the key by twisting it from the center of the cup cap.

Collect the specimen in the cup and secure the cap tightly by pressing down on the pull tab until an audible click is heard.

Check the temperature label up to 4 minutes after specimen collection. A green color will appear to indicate the temperature of the urine sample.

Place the cup on a flat surface and push the key into the socket to initiate the test.

Remove the peel of the label covering the test result and read the adulteration strip between 3 and 5 minutes.

Read the drug strip results for 5 minutes. The drug strip results remain stable for up to 60 minutes.

Interpretation of results:

NEGATIVE: A negative colored line in the control line region (C) and a colored line in the test line region (T) for a specific drug indicate a negative result.

POSITIVE: A colored line in the control line region (C) but no line in the test line region (T) for a specific drug indicates a positive result.

Case study:

In Hyderabad, TSANB recently found that a man bit off his thumb after a verbal skirmish on the road. On suspicion especially about his behavior, the cops conducted a drug test on him. It was found that the Hyderabad man had consumed drugs. The saliva was collected with the help of Drager and the cops concluded he had consumed drugs. A case was registered.

Drager: Drug Check 3000 Kit

Drager Drug Check 3000 kit is used to find out within minutes if a person recently consumed certain drugs. The compact and quick saliva (oral fluid) based drug test is reliable and affordable.

With the Drug Check 3000 test kit, you can test the subjects for up to six substance classes simultaneously. Depending on the version, the test can detect the following 7 substance classes:

Cocaine

Opiates

Amphetamine

Methamphetamine

Benzodiazepines

Oxycodone and

Cannabis

Of all the substance classes listed, cannabis is the drug consumed most frequently. It is also the most difficult of all compounds to identify (THC=delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This is why, Drager Drug Check 3000 was optimized to detect THC.

It now offers two measurement options. Depending on the chosen waiting time (pre-incubation) of the test, there is an option with a higher or sensitive option with a lower THC cut-off. The entire drug test only takes 3- 5 Minutes.

Directions for use:

Take the saliva sample using the sampler.

Insert the sampler into the funnel opening.

Shake the test kit.

Start the test analysis.

Read off the test result.

Drug Test: Obtain samples easily and safely:

Drager Drug Check 3000 consists of two components: A hygienic samples collator for obtaining a saliva sample, and a test cassette for the analysis. The test cassette contains the buffer liquid and a window with two test strips, which display the control and test lines. The drug test itself is performed in three easy steps: Swab the saliva sample, shake the test, wait for a brief incubation period, and then start the test. A colored indicator on the swab disappears as soon as it has absorbed enough oral fluid for a test.

As soon as the control lines appear in the window, you can read the result:

NEGATIVE: A line will appear alongside the respective substance class (Drug). This means that none of the target substances was detected in the sample.

POSITIVE: If a line fails to appear next to one of the substance classes, then the result for this substance is positive.

Telangana Anti Narcotics Bureau headed by senior IPS officer Sandeep Sandhilya currently comprises 100 officials across the state. From investigation and training to legal, it is working in different verticals. A separate set of cops work for the regional narcotic control center. They are placed in Hyderabad, Rachakonda, Cyberabad, and Warangal districts. The department envisages taking the number to 300 in the coming days. Earlier the department was headed by the Hyderabad former police Commissioner C V Anand. However after the new government came into charge, a new IPS officer was given its charge.
