Obesity in India will increase from 4.1 percent to 6.2 percent till 2035

Hyderabad: World Obesity Report has projected adults and children with high body mass index (BMI) would be growing at a rate of 4.1% and 6.2% annually between 2020 and 2035 in India.

Meanwhile, research has found potential anti-obesity properties in fermented bamboo shoots from a variety in Tripura, a statement from the Department of Science and Technology stated.

However, the tribals in the northeastern parts of the country are known to be using the food as part of their tradition, helping them stay fit and free from obesity.

Anti-obesity properties of ā€˜Melye-Amileyā€™

Bamboo shoots or bamboo sprouts of different bamboo varieties are edible. They are used in raw and processed form for consumption besides being used as a part of several dishes in India and several parts of Asia.

A recent study held at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IASST) has revealed that a bamboo variety from Tripura known as ā€˜Melye-Amileyā€™ is found to possess anti-obesity properties and have the potential to provide a solution to weight management.

Rich in pre and probiotics

The study has revealed that fermented bamboo shoots have the potential to reduce lipid accumulation and increase fatty acid beta-oxidation.

Dr. Tejaswini Tumma, Consultant Gastroenterologist & therapeutic Endoscopy, Kamineni Hospitals, Hyderabad said, ā€œFermented bamboo shoots are a good source of fiber, pre, and probiotics. Fibre helps in decreasing the quantity of food taken and probiotics improve gut healthā€.

With the study revealing the capacity of bamboo shoots to increase fat metabolism by activating the gene involved in lipid oxidation, the food can find a place in the weight management process.

ā€œStudies have shown that water extracts from a particular type of fermented bamboo shoot Melye- amiley has this capacity. These findings suggest that fermented bamboo shoot extract has promising anti-obesity effectsā€, Dr Tejaswini added.

Benefits of fermentation used for generations

Meanwhile, even before the research findings, the tribals in several northeast Indian states have been using fermented bamboo shoots as part of their food.

Dr Keerthi Reddy, from Skintis Clinic, Raidurg explained the history behind the process of fermentation used for several generations and the tribals using bamboo shoots as part of their dietary practice.

ā€œFermentation is an age-old process and has been used by several sections of the people for many centuries. It adds good bacteria and ensures healthy food and gut health. The presence of phytates can reduce food intake since people feel full on consumption. This helps in maintaining weight and staying away from being obeseā€, she said.

However, the number of studies carried out on the benefits of bamboo shoots is very few, and more scientific studies are required to establish the complete benefits.

ā€œBamboo shoots may cause allergic reactions in a few people. Because of the limited scientific research on their health benefits and potential risks, care should be taken before making them a part of your dietā€, Dr Tejaswini added.
