Amaravati: The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, on Sunday announced the appointment of retired Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazeer as Governor of Andhra Pradesh, and on transfer, Biswa Bhusan Harichandan is appointed Governor of Chhattisgarh.
Justice Abdul Nazir, who enrolled as an Advocate in 1983, practiced at the Karnataka High Court in Bengaluru. In May 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court. He was later appointed a Permanent Judge of the same High Court. Justice Nazeer was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2017 from the Karnataka High Court. He became only the third judge to be elevated in this way without becoming the chief justice of some high court.
In the Supreme Court, he was part of prominent judgments in the KS Puttaswamy case (which held the right to privacy a fundamental right), the triple talaq case(dissented to hold the practice as valid), Ayodhya-Babri Masjid dispute, demonetisation case(led the Constitution Bench).
He retired on 4 January 2023.
On Sunday, the President of India, Draupadi Murmu accepted the resignations of Bhagat Singh Koshyari as Governor of Maharashtra and Radha Krishnan Mathur as Lt. Governor of Ladakh.
