Kamareddy: A brilliant presence of mind shown by Banswada Sub-Collector Kiranmayi saved the life of an intermediate student who threatened to jump from a 60-foot water tank here.

The high drama lasted for nearly nine-and-a-half hours after an intermediate student climbed a 60-foot water tank and threatened to end her life. She took the extreme step after allegedly being reprimanded by her parents for excessive mobile phone usage.

The situation was brought under control after Banswada Sub-Collector Kiranmayi personally intervened and persuaded the girl to come down safely.

Incident triggered by family reprimand

According to police, Sravanti, a resident of Burgul village in Mahmadnagar mandal of Kamareddy district, is pursuing her Intermediate education at Indalvai Gurukulam and had recently appeared for her first-year examinations.

While staying at home, she was reportedly spending excessive time on her mobile phone. Concerned over this, her parents scolded her on Wednesday night, which left her distressed.

Climbed tank, ignored pleas

At 11 am on Thursday , Sravanti climbed halfway up the steps of a water tank located near her house, threatening to take her life. Despite repeated attempts by her parents and the village sarpanch to calm her down, she refused to listen.

Police were alerted, but upon seeing them, she grew more anxious and climbed to the top of the tank, intensifying the situation.

Sub-collector’s timely intervention

As the standoff continued for hours, Banswada Sub-Collector Kiranmayi rushed to Burgul village around 8 pm. Displaying remarkable presence of mind, she engaged the girl in conversation while slowly climbing the tank herself.

Reassuring Sravanti that her parents would not scold her further and offering emotional support, the Sub-Collector successfully convinced her to come down safely.

Nine-hour ordeal ends safely

With the Sub-Collector’s intervention, the prolonged drama finally ended on a positive note, bringing relief to the anxious family members and villagers who had gathered at the spot.

Authorities reiterated the importance of emotional support and counselling for adolescents dealing with stress and family conflicts.
