Kavitha allowed home-cooked food, mattress, stationery inside Tihar Jail
She has reached Tihar Jail and will be lodged in jail number 6, which is the women’s jail
By Coreena Suares Published on 26 March 2024 2:27 PM GMTDelhi: The Rouse Avenue district court in New Delhi, hearing the Delhi Liquor scam case, has directed the Tihar Jail authorities to allow accused MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha Rao to have home-cooked food, mattress, slippers, clothes, bedsheet, books and blanket, pen, paper, jewellery and medicines, in accordance with the rules.
“MLC Kavitha has been sentenced to 14 days judicial custody in the Delhi liquor Policy case. The BRS leader was taken to Tihar Jail. She has reached Tihar Jail and will be lodged in jail number 6, which is the women’s jail. A medical examination will be conducted,” an official said.
With the judicial custody, the ED’s custody has once to an end.
Sh Zoheb Hossain, Ld Special Counsel for the ED told the court that, based on an investigation conducted so far, it has been revealed that accused K Kavitha was a key conspirator and beneficiary of the Delhi Excise Policy scam and she along with other members of the ‘South group’ conspired with top leaders of Aam Adami Party (AAP) and given kickbacks of Rs 100 crores and in exchange, got undue favour for implementation and formulation of the excise policy. Hence, she was arrested.
‘Danger of witness tampering’
The special counsel also told the court that the arrestee is highly influential and there is every likelihood the arrestee will influence the witnesses and tamper with the evidence if released. It may hamper the ongoing investigation; and that the applicant/department is still further investigating the role of the arrestee in the instant matter and is unearthing the further proceeds of crime and identifying the other person who are involved or connected with the process or activities related to proceeds of crime.
Investigation into economic crimes is more complex than ordinary crimes as economic offenders are resourceful and influential persons having deep roots in society and commit the said crimes in a carefully planned and meticulous manner, thereby rendering the investigation process a complicated exercise, the counsel said.
Meanwhile, Nitesh Rana, Ld Counsel representing Kavitha, submitted a prayer for urgent interim relief on the grounds of the examination of her son. The examination of the child of the accused has commenced w.e.f. today i.e. March 26, 2024, in so far as the request for providing medical reports of the accused is concerned, her counsel said.
