Hyderabad: BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Friday announced that Maganti Sunitha, wife of late MLA Maganti Gopinath, has been chosen as the party’s candidate for the upcoming Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election.
The party said on Friday that with the death of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath, the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election will see her emerge as a senior leader in the party.
Maganti Gopinath had established himself as the favourite leader of the people of Jubilee Hills. Hence, his legacy was given priority in the selection of the party candidate and preference was given to his wife, Maganti Sunitha.
The party said it made this decision after understanding the commitment Maganti Gopinath had for the party as a sincere and selfless leader. Maganti Gopinath was recognised and respected among many for the services rendered to the party and the people and KCR took this decision to allow the late Gopinath’s family, as per the aspirations of the people of Jubilee Hills, a public note from the party said.
BRS leaders said that Sunitha would carry forward her husband’s legacy and win the bypoll to strengthen the party’s base in the constituency.
Who will be the Congress pick?
The ruling Congress party is yet to announce their candidate for the by-election. As per party sources, former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin is emerging as the likely candidate.
In July, Telangana Minister and Hyderabad district in-charge Ponnam Prabhakar ruled out the possibility of fielding an outsider, affirming that the nominee will be a local leader backed by public support.
“We will not import candidates. The person who has the support of the people will be fielded. A detailed survey will guide our decision,” Prabhakar said. “Once finalised, everyone in the party will work together to ensure victory. Just as we won Secunderabad Cantonment, we will win Jubilee Hills too.”
In 2023, AIMIM had supported the BRS candidate but the same is yet to be announced for the Jubilee seat this time.
