Hyderabad: India is witnessing an unusually early onset of the southwest monsoon in 2025, with Kerala experiencing its earliest monsoon arrival in 16 years. The monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, eight days ahead of the typical June 1 onset, marking the earliest appearance over the Indian mainland since 2009.
Rapid Progression across Subcontinent
Following its early arrival in Kerala, the monsoon advanced swiftly northward. It reached Maharashtra on May 25, ten days earlier than usual, and Goa on May 26, marking the earliest onset in 20 years for the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates that Mumbai could experience its earliest monsoon onset since 1956, with conditions favorable for arrival within the next three days.
In Karnataka, the monsoon has already covered 60% of the state as of May 26, a significant development that could make May 2025 the wettest in 15 years for the region.
The monsoon's rapid advancement is attributed to a low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, which has accelerated its progression through the western coast of India.
Agricultural Implications
In regions like Marathwada, the early rains have led to a 1,030% increase in rainfall compared to the average, causing concerns over potential damage to summer crops such as bajra, jowar, groundnuts, and vegetables. Experts warn that persistent rainfall could disrupt the Kharif sowing season, posing challenges for farmers and crop yields.
Climate Patterns and Future Outlook
The unusual early onset of the monsoon is influenced by atmospheric and oceanic conditions, including the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and the Equatorial Indian Ocean Oscillation (EQUINOO). These factors contribute to the variability in monsoon timing and intensity. The IMD forecasts above-average rainfall for 2025, marking the second consecutive year of strong monsoon performance.
