Warangal: The Matwada police have registered a case against seven senior students of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) for allegedly subjecting their juniors to severe physical and mental torture.

The accused, all from the 2023 batch, reportedly forced junior students to perform demeaning physical tasks, including ‘kneel down’ and ‘air chair’ positions for extended hours on the hostel terrace.

College’s internal probe revealed abuse

The incident, which occurred on the night of March 29, came to light following a formal complaint filed through the UGC Anti-Ragging Helpline.

Acting swiftly, the KMC Principal, Dr S Sandhya, and the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee launched an internal enquiry, which confirmed the abuse of the 2024-batch students.

What happened?

Addressing the media, Dr Sandhya revealed the motive behind the incident, stating that the seniors were triggered by the behaviour of their juniors in a WhatsApp group.

“During our enquiry, we found that the seniors felt they were not receiving the ‘due respect’ from the juniors. They were upset over some WhatsApp messages where the juniors failed to address them properly, which the seniors perceived as a sign of disrespect,” she explained.

The seven seniors booked in the case have been identified as Gangula Badrinath, K Moses Shalem Raj, Jogiparthi Teja, Dharavathu Anand Naik, Talari Mahesh, Gandamalla Anthonaiah and Maddala Komal Hithesh.

What action did the college take?

In response to the gravity of the misconduct, the college administration has already initiated disciplinary action, permanently expelling the seven individuals from the hostel and suspending them from all academic activities for six months.

Matwada Inspector Nadipelli Karunakar confirmed that a criminal case has been registered based on the college’s complaint. The FIR invokes sections of the Telangana Prohibition of Ragging Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

“We requested the police to register a case to ensure a thorough investigation and uphold the safety and well-being of the student community at KMC,” the principal stated.
