What is avulsion fracture?
Avulsion fracture is when the ligament near the bones snaps and brings out a small portion of the bone along with it. Avulsion fracture occurs mostly in athletes as they suddenly change direction, leap and jump.
Common in athletes
Dr. N. Soma Sekhar Reddy, a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, explains, āAvulsion fractures can happen to anyone but it is more common in athletes. We are seeing cases of people slipping in bathrooms or on slippery surfaces coming to clinics with avulsion fractures.ā In the case of MLC Kavitha, too, she slipped at home which led to the trauma of the bone.
The MLC has been advised three weeks of bed rest which is being noted as a natural process of healing. Dr. Reddy explains, āIn some cases where there is only a ligament tear we have to screw it up and put a sling. There are some cases where natural healing helps. In this case, the bed rest is for natural healing.ā
MLC Kavitha appeared three times before the Enforcement Directorate in New Delhi for the Delhi Excise Policy Scam case in March 2023.
Some have raised doubts about her medical condition and questioned whether it is a tactic to avoid further investigation. However, that does not seem to be the case as she slipped and injured herself at her home.
Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 was withdrawn by the Aam Aadmi Party after Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and 14 others were accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation of criminal conspiracy and corruption for framing and implementing the policy. Kavitha K. is also one of the accused.
