Hyderabad: Hari Chandana Dasari, District Collector, Nalgonda, has issued a show cause notice to the Municipal Commissioner, Nandikonda, D Sreenu, and the EE, Irrigation after 16 monkeys drowned in the water tank at Hill Colony, Nagarjunasagar

J Srinivas, Additional Collector (LBs) Nalgonda and the Regional Director of MA&UD, Hyderabad inspected the spot. Their report sheds light on the circumstances surrounding the incident and subsequent measures taken.

Official Response and Accountability

In response to the incident, a show-cause notice has been issued by the District Collector, Nalgonda, to the Municipal Commissioner, Nandikonda, and the EE, Irrigation to address any lapses in the handling of the situation.

Incident Details

The incident occurred at a water tank situated near Vijay Vihar, Hill Colony, Nagarjunasagar, with a total capacity of 10,000 liters.

According to the inquiry report by Municipal Commissioner D. Sreenu, only nine households were directly connected to the tank for drinking water supply, with one house remaining unoccupied.

Despite the presence of 49 households in the locality, approximately 40 houses were supplied water from other sources, excluding the tank in question.

Water Supply Infrastructure

The distribution of drinking water to Hill Colony and Pylon Colony is primarily managed through three large overhead tanks and one underground tank, each with a capacity of about 300,000 liters. The water distribution system falls under the purview of the NSP Engineering wing, supervised by the Assistant Engineer and Divisional Executive Engineer of NSP.

Chronology of Events

The Municipal Commissioner received information about the monkey deaths on April 3 prompting immediate action. Upon inspection, authorities discovered the bodies of 16 monkeys of varying ages in the water tank. Postmortem reports confirmed that the deaths occurred within 24 hours before the discovery.

Public Health Assessment

Following the incident, there have been no reported adverse health issues among the residents of Hill Colony. Superintendent Bhanuprasad of the Area Hospital, KNAH Hill Colony, assured the availability of necessary medicines and equipment to address any potential health concerns.

Remedial Actions

Authorities have swiftly arranged for an alternate pipeline to supply water to the nine households previously connected to the tank. The tank has been closed off, and no further untoward incidents have been reported.
