Hyderabad: Women voters outnumber men across urban local bodies, underlining a significant demographic trend in Telangana’s cities and towns.
Analysis of the final electoral rolls for the upcoming municipal elections reveals a strong female presence in the state’s urban electorate.
The elections for the urban local bodies are likely to be held next month. The process has been taken up for those municipalities and corporations whose term ended in July 2025.
Over 52.43 lakh voters in urban Telangana
The Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) has released the final voter list for municipalities and municipal corporations scheduled to go to the polls. As per the data, 52,43,023 voters are eligible to vote in 118 municipalities and five municipal corporations in Telangana.
The five municipal corporations are Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Mancherial and Ramagundam.
Women form majority of urban electorate
The gender-wise break-up of voters shows a clear edge for women:
Women voters: 26,80,014
Men voters: 25,62,369
Transgender voters: 640
Officials noted that the number of women voters is higher than that of men in a majority of municipalities and corporations, highlighting a notable shift in urban voting patterns.
Voter mapping put on hold as GHMC terms near completion
The Election Commission has deferred the mapping and verification of voters in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Khammam and Warangal municipal corporations, as their elected bodies are yet to complete their terms.
GHMC’s term is scheduled to end in February, while the tenures of the Khammam and Warangal corporations will conclude in April.
Nizamabad Corporation has highest voter strength
Among municipal corporations, Nizamabad tops the list with 3,48,051 voters, making it the largest urban electorate in the state. Kothagudem stands at the lower end among corporations, with 1,34,775 voters.
Adilabad leads among municipalities
At the municipality level, Adilabad has the highest number of voters at 1,43,655, while Amarchinta has the smallest electorate, with just 9,147 voters registered.
Reservation process key before poll notification
The Municipal Administration Department has stepped up efforts to conduct the elections. Officials said the election notification will be issued after the reservation process is completed.
Reservations for wards and divisions in municipalities and corporations will be finalised based on population norms. With reservations being a crucial component of the election process, authorities are working to complete the exercise within the stipulated timeframe.
Elections due in 123 Urban Local Bodies
Urban local body elections are due in 117 municipalities and six municipal corporations where the tenure of elected bodies has ended.
With the final voter list now published, the groundwork has been laid for the next phase of municipal elections in Telangana.
Focus on ward reservations ahead of Municipal Poll Notification
State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini held a meeting with representatives of recognised political parties as part of the preparatory process for the upcoming municipal elections.
The election notification will be issued after finalising reservations for various categories, with ward and division reservations in municipalities and municipal corporations to be determined based on population data. With reservations emerging as a key and sensitive issue, election officials are giving it top priority ahead of the notification.
Meanwhile, the polling station list along with polling station-wise photo electoral rolls will be made public on January 16 at the offices of District Collectors, Municipal Commissioners, District Election Authorities (DEAs), Revenue Divisional Officers (RDOs), and Tahsildars.
