Munugode by-election has come as a bolt from the blue for Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Indian National Congress (INC), and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
With general elections in 2024, TRS hoping for a third win in a row. Rumor mills are churning that there will be more by-polls as some TRS leaders are ready to jump ship and join BJP.
BJP is creating all the right noises. A win or loss certainly matters for every political party, especially ruling TRS.
A win will boost the morale of the party. The result may also shape the mood of people in the run-up to the general election.
TRS, Congress, and BJP have high stakes in the 2023 general election which can make or mar parties.
In the 2018 general election, Congress candidate Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy won the seat defeating TRS candidate Koosakuntla Prabhakar Reddy.
Rajgopal Reddy (INC) polled 97,239 votes (48.90%), Koosakuntla Prabhakar Reddy (TRS) got 74,687 votes (37.56%) votes and BJP's Gangidi Manohar Reddy (BJP) 12,725 votes (6.40 %)
Munugode is part of the Bhongir Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituency in the Nalgonda district. The constituency has 2,00,956 voters including 1,02,801 males, and 98,146 females. In 2018 Telangana elections, Munugode recorded a voter turnout of 91.07%. In 2014 the turnout was 82.14%.
Since the formation of Telangana on June 2, 2014, there were five by-elections. TRS won three and BJP two. But BJP's two wins rattled TRS.
BJP's win in Dubbaka and Huzurabad gave a shot in the arm to the fledgling party, which aims to dislodge TRS in the next election. Its `Look South Policy' is aimed at dislodging regional parties and forming governments.
