Devarakonda: Tension gripped Devarakonda in the Nalgonda district after a man embroiled in a land dispute fell unconscious and subsequently passed away.
The dispute revolved around a piece of land between two brothers from Palem Thanda, under the jurisdiction of the Polepalliramnagar Panchayat in Chintapalli mandal.
Following the simmering discord, Chintapalli Sub-Inspector Satish Reddy intervened, summoning both parties to the police station on Sunday for questioning.
During the interrogation, Nenavath Surya (60), a member of the community, lost consciousness. rushed to Devarakonda Government Hospital, he tragically succumbed while undergoing treatment.
On Sunday night, the deceased's family and relatives staged a protest at the hospital, alleging that Suryanayak's demise resulted from a beating by SI Satish Reddy.
Expressing their intent to bring the deceased's body to Chintapalli for a demonstration in front of the police station, the aggrieved family was restrained by the police.
Subsequent attempts on Monday morning to conduct a post-mortem at the hospital were opposed by the deceased's relatives, leading to a confrontation with the police.
Attempting to defuse the situation, DSP Giribabu informed the protesters of SI Satish Reddy's suspension and assured them of a commission's investigation. The aggrieved parties relented upon the promise of government compensation for the victim's family. Subsequently, the body was shifted to the deceased's native village.
Despite assurances, the family, accompanied by political leaders, resumed their protest in the village, vowing not to perform the last rites until justice was served. Their demands included five acres of land, a government job, and one crore rupees in compensation.
Devarakonda RDO Sriramulu and DSP Giribabu's attempts to mollify the protesters proved futile, prompting them to escalate the matter to Nalgonda Collector R.V. Karnan.
In a significant development, the Collector pledged five acres of government land and a contractual job for one family member, finally quelling the agitation.
Nalgonda SP Apoorva Rao announced on Monday the suspension of Chintapalli SI Satish Reddy on the orders of the Inspector General, citing allegations of his involvement in the death of Suryanayak and the underlying land dispute.
A case registered under section 174 in the Chinthapally police station complaint was given by the victim's son Nenavath Rajesh.
