NewsMeter wins Thalaivaa Award for combating misinformation in regional languages

Hyderabad: NewsMeter's Fact Check team received the Thalaivaa Award for its contributions in regional languages as a part of the Shakti Collective, which is a DataLEADS and Google News Initiative aimed at combating election misinformation during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, held from April to June
To address misinformation, disinformation and propaganda warfare by political parties during the seven-phase General Elections, media executives across India set aside their rivalries to collaborate on Shakti. Supported by funding from the Google News Initiative, the project facilitated the translation and distribution of fact-check reports among approximately 50 newsrooms.

As part of the project, NewsMeter contributed fact-checks in South Indian languages (Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam), as well as in English, which were republished by 20 leading media organisations. Out of the 12 organisations specialising in fact-checking, NewsMeter ranked fourth in the number of articles republished.
