`Niagara of Telangana’: After five days, Mulugu’s Bogatha Waterfall reopened for tourists

Hyderabad: After five days, Bogatha Waterfall in Mulugu district has been reopened for tourists.

Located in Wazedu mandal and often referred to as the ‘Niagara of Telangana,’ the waterfall is a popular destination for nature lovers and is now accessible under strict conditions set by the forest department.

The authorities had closed the waterfall after water levels rose due to heavy rains.

Conditional Reopening

On Tuesday, July 29, the forest department granted conditional permission to reopen the site following a temporary lull in rainfall. The decision comes after water levels at the falls began to stabilise.

“Tourists are allowed to visit the area, but entry into the water is strictly prohibited,” officials said, citing fluctuating water levels and powerful upstream inflows that continue to pose a risk.

Forest and police personnel have been stationed in the area during peak visiting hours to ensure compliance.

Safety Measures Enforced

Authorities have warned that violations of the safety guidelines will be dealt with under applicable forest and police laws.

“Due to the flash flood threat, no entry into the bottom pool will be permitted under any circumstances,” a forest official said. “Tourists must cooperate with ground personnel and adhere to all instructions.”

Other Waterfalls Closed

In the same notice, the forest department also announced the permanent closure of four other waterfalls in the region: Muthyam Dhara, Kongala, Maidiloddi, and Krishnapuram. These sites were deemed unsafe due to their steep terrain and unpredictable water currents.

Popular Eco-Tourism Spot

Bogatha waterfall is situated within the green forest zone of the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary and is approximately a five-hour drive from Hyderabad via Mulugu and Eturunagaram. The site has long been favoured for eco-tourism and short road trips from Hyderabad and surrounding areas.

Recent videos and photographs of the waterfall in full flow have drawn renewed interest from travelers. However, officials are urging caution and asking tourists to check for weather updates before visiting.

Advisory for Visitors

As Telangana enters the latter half of its monsoon season, the forest department advises travelers to remain alert and follow all official guidelines.

“Weather conditions in these areas can change rapidly. We request visitors to stay informed and prioritise safety at all times,” an official added.

The temporary reopening of Bogatha waterfall offers a limited opportunity to witness the region’s monsoon-fed natural beauty. However, authorities emphasise that public safety remains the top priority.
