Night bazaars to tourism hubs: Telangana to set up 55-km Musi economic and recreational corridor

Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy outlined a plan to transform Hyderabad’s water bodies into vibrant “Lake Economy Zones” that generate livelihoods while promoting sustainable urban development.

He unveiled the ambitious plan during the inauguration of the restored Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla Lake at Shivarampally.

HYDRAA has rejuvenated the lake as part of the State government’s 99-day action plan under Praja Palana – Pragathi Pranalika, aimed at accelerating infrastructure and environmental restoration works across the city.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said lakes must serve not only as ecological assets but also as centres of economic activity, particularly benefiting women through self-help groups.

Lake economy along Musi: 55-km development plan

Highlighting the Musi River rejuvenation project, Revanth Reddy announced plans to develop both sides of the river from Gandipet to Gowrelli, covering nearly 55 kilometres, into a dynamic economic and recreational corridor.

Night bazaars, tourism hubs, and organised vending zones will be created to support small traders, auto drivers, taxi operators, and food vendors. Businesses along the riverfront will be permitted to operate until 1 a.m. to encourage a night-time economy.

The Chief Minister said the government would ensure proper rehabilitation and housing for poor families affected by the riverfront development project.

Women-centric livelihood model

Revanth Reddy directed officials to facilitate kiosks and vending stalls around lakes to enable morning walkers to purchase milk, fruits, and vegetables. These stalls, he said, should primarily be allotted to women’s self-help groups, turning lakes into sustainable income hubs for local communities.

He extended greetings on International Women’s Day and encouraged women to actively participate in emerging economic opportunities.

Restoring Hyderabad’s Ecological and Historic Identity

Recalling that Hyderabad was once known globally as a “City of Lakes and Rocks,” the Chief Minister stressed the shared responsibility of citizens in preserving the city’s environmental and cultural heritage.

He said the government has already inaugurated the eco-park at Himayat Sagar Lake and is restoring encroached lakes, nalas, and parks across the city. He also referred to the earlier revival of Batukamma Kunta in Amberpet as part of broader conservation efforts.

Emphasising heritage preservation, Mr. Reddy noted that landmarks such as Charminar, Golconda Fort, Osmania General Hospital, and Falaknuma Palace reflect the city’s historic legacy, which the government aims to protect while modernising infrastructure.

He reiterated the commitment to expanding Metro connectivity, constructing new bridges and upgrading road networks, particularly in the Old City.

Lake Policing and Public Safety

To ensure safety at restored water bodies, the Chief Minister instructed officials to introduce a dedicated “Lake Policing” system. The move aims to enhance security, especially for women and families visiting lakes for recreation.

Lake area expanded to 18 Acres

HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said encroachments at Bum-Rukn-ud-Dowla Lake were cleared, and the water spread area expanded from 4.2 acres to 18 acres. The redevelopment includes walking tracks, open gyms, and children’s play areas to promote public health and recreation.

The Chief Minister also visited stalls set up by women’s self-help groups near the lake and inaugurated an open gym at the venue.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Kumar Yadav, Bahadurpura MLA Mohammed Mubeen, MLC Mirza Rahmath Baig, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, GHMC Commissioner Karnan, and other public representatives were present at the programme.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Chief Minister said Hyderabad would be developed into a globally competitive metropolitan city while safeguarding its environment, heritage and livelihoods.
