New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which bans all online games involving money.
The legislation, cleared by a voice vote amid protests from the Opposition, is aimed at tackling the growing menace of gambling addiction, financial fraud, and money laundering through betting apps.
What the Bill proposes
The Bill makes it illegal to offer or facilitate online betting and gambling, covering platforms ranging from fantasy sports to card games such as Poker and Rummy, as well as online lotteries.
It also prohibits advertisements promoting such games and bars banks and financial institutions from transferring funds for online money gaming.
Violations will invite imprisonment of up to three years and/or a fine of up to Rs 1 crore.
Government’s stand
Introducing the Bill, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the measure was necessary to safeguard citizens, especially youth, from the damaging impact of online money games.
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day soon after the passage of the Bill.
