According to the officials, there are around 2,800 to 3,000 Indians stranded. The mega operation has been launched to rescue thousands of citizens stranded in Sudan.

So far, two batches of Indias have returned. The third batch of another 135 stranded Indians, aboard the second IAF C-130J aircraft that had left strife-torn Sudan, has reached Saudi Arabia's Jeddah.

In the two batches, 278 and 148 people have been evacuated. On Wednesday, Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan, received the second batch of Indians as the first IAF C-130J reached Jeddah airport.

56 Telugu people stranded

As per the officials, there are 56 Telugu people stranded in Sudan.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy asked the officials to take steps to bring the Telugu stranded in strife-torn Sudan.

Chief Minister told his officials to coordinate with the central government officials and make travel arrangements to bring back stranded Telugus safely. Asking them to ensure they are sent to their native places on their return to India, he told them to extend all possible support to the stranded Telugu people.

Operation Kaveri

India said it had positioned two transport aircraft of the IAF in Jeddah and the naval ship INS Sumedha at Port Sudan as part of its contingency plans to evacuate the stranded Indians. The government is focusing on the safety of over 3,000 Indian citizens currently located throughout Sudan.

The deadly fighting between Sudan's army and a paramilitary group for the past 12 days has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

Operation Kaveri involves the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, being coordinated by the Ministry of External Affairs. Most of the civilians are being brought by road to Port Sudan, a perilous journey, to be evacuated by air and sea.

Significance of the name

The name 'Operation Kaveri' has a great meaning to be told. Kaveri is one of the major Indian rivers flowing through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is worshipped as the Mother Kaveri. Just like rivers reach their destination despite barriers, Operation Kaveri is compared to a mother who ensures to bring her children back safely.
