Orange alert: IMD forecasts thunderstorms, squalls in Telangana; mercury may touch 40°C in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Telangana, including Hyderabad. Severe thunderstorms and squalls are expected to begin Friday evening.
The alert covers nearly all districts of the state, indicating widespread rain and lightning activity.
IMD Forecast: Thunderstorms with Gusty Winds
According to IMD Hyderabad, the weather will remain partly cloudy until April 28, with frequent rain or thunderstorms expected between April 26 and April 28. These conditions may also be accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours.
“We are seeing typical pre-monsoon activity, triggered by surface heating and atmospheric instability. These localised storms can form rapidly and may bring short but intense spells of rain," K. S. Sridhar, a meteorologist with IMD Hyderabad, told NewsMeter.
Severe Heat Expected to Ease
Weather analyst T. Balaji stated that Friday is likely to be the last day of the ongoing heatwave. He has predicted severe storms in the western, central, and northern parts of Telangana during the evening and night hours.
Temperature Trends Across the State
The IMD has projected that temperatures across Telangana could reach up to 44°C on Friday, with gradual relief expected from Saturday onward. By April 28, maximum temperatures are likely to settle around 41°C.
In Hyderabad, temperatures are forecasted to range between 36°C and 40°C over the next four days. The highest recorded temperature in the city on Thursday was 42°C in Saidabad.
Elsewhere in the state, Nizamabad recorded 45.4°C, making it one of the hottest areas on record this week.
Relief Expected After Friday
Meteorologists suggest that the incoming storm systems will lead to a drop in both day and night temperatures. “Storm activity helps to break the heat build-up,” Sridhar added. “Once the rains begin, residents should experience noticeably cooler evenings and early mornings.”
Precautions Advised
Authorities have urged the public to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and take shelter during high wind activity. Sudden squalls could lead to falling branches or flying debris, especially in open or poorly sheltered areas.
Emergency services are on standby, and municipal bodies have been directed to remain alert to waterlogging or storm-related disruptions in urban areas, particularly in Hyderabad.
Residents are advised to stay updated through official IMD bulletins and take necessary precautions during the forecasted weather changes.
