Pay Rs 59.65 crore to get electricity back, Telangana HC tells Sangareddy GITAM on power dues

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court ordered GITAM University, Sangareddy, to pay Rs 59.65 crores. within three weeks to facilitate the restoration of the electricity supply to the University.

Total pending dues at Rs 118.13 crore

The amount is half of the total outstanding power dues amounting to Rs 118.13 crores that the university owes to the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TGSPDCL).

On Thursday, the High Court Division Bench, comprising Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya and Justice Gadi Praveen Kumar, sent the order to pay the pending electrical dues to the secretary of Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, GITAM University, Sangareddy.

What is the case about?

The judicial proceedings leading to this order commenced when GITAM University filed a writ petition seeking a stay on the demand notice issued by SPDCL in September 2025 for the total amount of Rs 118.13 crore.

The matter was initially heard by Justice T Madhavi Devi on January 9, wherein the Single Judge directed SPDCL to restore the electricity power connection to GITAM University.

Aggrieved by this order, SPDCL Telangana preferred a writ appeal, which came up for hearing before the Division Bench, resulting in the direction to the University to pay half of the electricity power dues totalling Rs 59.65 crores to the TGSPDCL within three weeks as a condition precedent for restoration of power connection and consequently disposed of the writ appeal.

Power dues accumulated over two decades

The Division Bench was adjudicating a writ appeal filed by SPDCL Telangana challenging the Single Judge’s order.

During the proceedings, it emerged that despite GITAM University having accumulated power dues exceeding Rs 100 crores, the power connection to the University had not been disconnected, an aspect that was taken seriously by another Single Judge, Justice Nagesh Bheemapaka, when he was adjudicating the writ petition.

During the hearing before Justice Nagesh Bheemapaka, the learned judge summoned the Superintendent Engineer of SPDCL to court and questioned him regarding the reasons for continuing power connection to the university despite it being a defaulter in payment of power dues, which had accumulated over the last two decades.

Subsequently, following a change in subject allocation before the Judges, this matter was allocated to Justice T Madhavi Devi, who adjudicated the writ petition and directed SPDCL to restore power supply to the University.

This order of Justice T Madhavi Devi was challenged by SPDCL by way of writ appeal No 92 of 2026, wherein the Division Bench directed GITAM University to pay half of the outstanding power dues as a condition for restoration of its power connection.
