Rahul Gandhi makes dosas, promises support from Delhi on third day of Telangana tour

Hyderabad: “Aaj Telangana meh maine dosa bannana bhi sikh liyah (Today, I learnt how to make dosas in Telangana),” Rahul Gandhi said while addressing an enthusiastic crowd in Jagtial, who had come to see the senior Congress leader from districts in Northern Telangana.

Rahul Gandhi is on a three-day tour in Telangana for the upcoming state legislative elections to be held on November 30. He scheduled his tour to cover Northern Telangana on the suggestions of the party workers and leaders to strengthen the Congress profile in the region.

According to the Telangana Congress members, the party has less support in this region and they are hoping that Rahul Gandhi’s visit will boost the morale of the party workers. Since these parts of Telangana were not covered during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress planned an open bus yatra, street corner meetings and a padayatra to get in touch with the voters and know their issues and wants.

On the third day of his visit, Rahul Gandhi could feel the October heat of Telangana and thanked those who had gathered in the sweltering temperature to listen to him. In an open meeting held on the road, villagers from in and around Jagtial gathered around Rahul in large groups to listen to him.

“This cadre is like tigers and they will throw out the regime of KCR,” said Gandhi, equating the Telangana Congress cadre to tigers. He said that the Congress cadre had withstood the pressure from the BRS regime and had stayed loyal to the party.

Rahul tries his hand at making dosas

On his way to Jagtial, during their break near a tea vendor in Kondagattu town, Rahul Gandhi wanted to try his hand at dosa-making.

Taking instructions from a stall owner, he took the dosa griddle and spread it around on a hot pan, while the onlookers cheered him on. When the other party senior leaders directed him to make it like an omelette, Rahul said, “Omelette toh main achha bana leta hu (I know how to make a good omelette).” After the dosa was made, the dosa vendor was asked to taste it and give his opinion. The crowd cheered after the positive feedback.

Familial connection with Telangana

Rahul spoke extensively about many issues facing the state during his public speech. His Hindi speech was translated by MLA candidate aspirant T Jeevan Reddy, whom Rahul Gandhi thanked for his Telugu translation.

Speaking about his connection to Telangana, Rahul mentioned how from Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi, his family shares an affectionate relationship with the people of Telangana.

“I am in Delhi to fight for your rights. The biggest issue right now in the country is the caste census. This census will make it clear how the wealth in the country is distributed. The caste census will tell us the right representation in terms of how many Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other communities are there in the country. We want the caste census of 2011 to be declared and a new caste census to be taken up.”

“The country is governed by bureaucrats and when I asked them how many of their secretaries are from other Backward Classes, I was told only three out of 90 individuals,” said Rahul Gandhi. “If we want real prosperity, we must give representation to farmers, labourers and women from marginalised communities,” he added.

Promise to farmers

“After the Congress party assumes power in the state, we will revive all sugar factories in Telangana,” Rahul promised. The sugar factory in Jagtial is not operational.

He said, “We are committed to ensuring the maximum sale price of Rs 12,000-15,000 per quintal for turmeric crops. Furthermore, as Congress promised during the Warangal declaration, we will provide an additional Rs 500 per quintal for paddy.”

‘BJP, BRS and AIMIM are connected’

Reiterating his thoughts on Bharatiya Janata Party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen working together against the Congress party in Telangana, he said, “The CM (KCR) and the PM (Modi) are working together, hand-in-hand with each other. The AIMIM is not fighting the BJP. Wherever Congress fights with the BJP, AIMIM fields candidates to disturb the Congress party's chances. The BJP favours AIMIM, just as the BRS favours the BJP. Ultimately it is the people of Telangana who will lose if they get elected.”
