Hyderabad: After a sweltering day with temperatures soaring above 38°C, sudden rain in Hyderabad lashed several parts of the city on Friday night, bringing much-needed relief from the heat but also triggering traffic snarls and water-logging in low-lying areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an urgent weather alert at approximately 9:00 PM, predicting that the spell would continue for the next few hours.

IMD Issues alert

According to the Meteorological Centre, "Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are very likely to occur in many parts of the GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) area during the next couple of hours."

Residents across Secunderabad, Gachibowli, Madhapur, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Kukatpally, and Mehdipatnam reported moderate to heavy downpours accompanied by strong winds. The sudden change in weather led to several commuters being caught off guard, with many seeking shelter under flyovers and metro stations.

Impact and Safety Advisory

The IMD has placed the city under a 'Yellow' alert, warning of potential impacts including:

Water Pooling: Accumulation of water on arterial roads and low-lying areas.

Traffic Disruptions: Slow movement of vehicles due to wet and slippery roads.

Safety Warning: Citizens are advised to restrict movement during the thunderstorm and stay away from electric poles and trees due to gusty winds.

Temperature and Forecast

Earlier today, the city recorded a maximum temperature of 38.2°C, while the minimum stood at 23.8°C. The humidity was recorded at 55%.

The rain in Hyderabad is expected to persist as part of a wider weather pattern affecting Telangana. The IMD’s 7-day forecast indicates that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places across the state until April 2.

For Saturday, March 28, the weather office has predicted a maximum temperature of 39°C and a minimum of 24°C, with a high probability of evening thundershowers.

Yellow Warning for Districts

Apart from the rain in Hyderabad, a yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) has been issued for Adilabad, Komuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy districts.

The Municipal Corporation and emergency services are on alert to clear water-logging and ensure smooth traffic flow as the rain in Hyderabad continues through the night.
