New Delhi: Rekha Gupta to be sworn in the new chief minister of Delhi on February 20 

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party appointed Rekha Gupta as the next chief minister of Delhi. She will be the fourth woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit and Atishi. Parvesh Verma will be the deputy chief minister of Delhi. Verma defeated former chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal. The swearing in ceremony will be on February 20th where BJP is planning a grand function. Rekha Gupta won from Shalimar Bagh (North West ) seat with 68,200 votes. BJP came to power after 26 years in Delhi.

Who is Rekha Gupta?

Fifty year old Rekha Gupta is a senior BJP leader who has been with the party from student days. Her journey in politics started as president of Delhi University Students Union in 1996. She later transitioned into municipal politics, winning the Delhi counicllor elections from Uttari Pitampura in 2007 and re-elected in 2012. She also was the mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

A lawyer by profession, she also served as general secretary of Delhi BJP. She has also held the position of national vice-president of BJPā€™s Mahila morcha. BJP senior leaders showed the preference for a woman leader to lead the capital as she is the senior most leader and has been active on the ground with the initiatives of the BJP.

BJPā€™s decision

BJP has 48 newly elected legislators and they chose Rekha Gupta as their new leader. Senior leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and O P Dhankar as central observers oversaw the entire selection process. The leaders discussed with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then the announcement was made.

A grand ceremony

BJP is planning a grand ceremony in Delhi as 30,000 guests are invited. The party workers and leaders in Delhi who worked for the election will be a part of the swearing in ceremony.
