Hyderabad: Congress leader Revanth Reddy called for an impartial investigation into the Kaleshwaram irrigation project, alleging irregularities and damage to the infrastructure.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) stressed the need for an investigation under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, as well as the inclusion of technical experts from other states. He said this will ensure that the investigation remains impartial and unbiased.

Revanth Reddy also urged prime minister Narendra Modi to personally inspect the Medigadda barrage during his next visit to Telangana, emphasising the importance of understanding the situation firsthand.

Highlighting NDSA report

Highlighting the Medigadda barrage incident where the sinking of the piers was reported, Revanth Reddy said that the incident revealed discrepancies in the projectā€™s construction and deviations from the original plans. The National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) has officially stated that the entire project could be damaged, necessitating complete demolition and reconstruction, he said.

Allegations of financial irregularities

The Congress leader accused the chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao and his family of being ā€˜financial terrorists.ā€™ He pointed out that the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project was initially planned by the Congress but has undergone significant alterations under KCRā€™s leadership.

ā€œThese alterations led to an increase in the estimated project cost from Rs 38,500 crores to a staggering Rs one lakh crores. Despite this substantial investment, the projectā€™s quality and integrity have been called into question,ā€ he said.

Congress calls for KCRā€™s removal during investigation

The Congress party has demanded the temporary removal of KCR and minister Harish Rao from their positions to prevent any potential influence over the inquiry.

The Congress party leaders questioned why the Central government has not taken action against KCR or demanded clarification from the State government. They said that despite CM KCRā€™s claims that there were no irregularities, no action has been initiated against the contractors responsible for the project.

Revanth Reddy also alleged inflation of the estimated cost of the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency in these financial matters.
