Roads submerged, power breakdown: Fresh rains throw life out of gear in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A sudden spell of heavy rain on Wednesday evening threw life out of gear in Hyderabad.

The rains caused waterlogging and submerged roads. Several areas were plunged into darkness due to power outages.

Rainfall Concentrated in Western and Northern Areas

The showers, which began as scattered rainfall, intensified into a heavy downpour across Serilingampally, Miyapur, Chandanagar, Kukatpally, and RC Puram. Uppal, Kapra, Musheerabad, Malkajgiri, and the surrounding neighborhoods of Osmania University were also affected.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS), JP Nagar Community Hall in Chandanagar recorded the day’s highest rainfall at 97.5 mm. MMTS Lingampally received 82.3 mm, the University of Hyderabad in Serilingampally recorded 81.3 mm, Gachibowli saw 66.5 mm, and PJR Stadium in Chandanagar received 64.8 mm.




Localities Affected in Secunderabad

Heavy showers also hit Marredpally, Trimulgherry, Alwal, ECIL crossroads, Kapra, Dr. A.S. Rao Nagar, Safilguda, Moula Ali, Tarnaka, and Habsiguda. Motorists reported difficulty navigating waterlogged roads, particularly in low-lying stretches. Officials confirmed power disruptions in several affected areas.

More Rains Expected in Coming Hours

Weather trackers noted that the rainfall zone was spreading further across the city. Local weather enthusiast T. Balaji observed, “After covering western and northern Hyderabad, rains are expected to move into Kondapur, Miyapur, RC Puram, Serilingampally, Patancheru, Qutbullapur, Gajularamaram, Balanagar, Suchitra, Jeedimetla, and nearby areas in the next few hours.”

IMD Forecast Till September 22

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, forecasted thunderstorms and light rains across several districts of Telangana over the next few days.

“Thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in isolated places across Telangana until September 22. Hyderabad can expect intermittent rains during this period, with heavier spells in some pockets,” said meteorologist K.S. Sridhar speaking to Newsmeter.

Districts likely to experience rainfall include Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Kumaram Bheem, Mahabubnagar, Mulugu, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Sangareddy, Wanaparthy, Peddapalle, Vikarabad, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.

Situation Being Monitored

Authorities have urged commuters to avoid flooded roads and advised residents to remain alert in areas prone to waterlogging. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) stated that emergency response teams were deployed in multiple zones.
